This May 20, 1897 business letter from Townsend, Montana was written on the illustrated letterhead of J. G. Blessing, a contractor specializing in masonry, plastering, bricklaying, and calcimining.

In the late nineteenth century, building trades in Montana expanded alongside railroad growth and town development, with local contractors relying on regional hardware suppliers for bulk materials. Printed letterheads such as this one functioned as both invoice stationery and advertisements for specialized construction services.

The red-ink header prominently lists J. G. Blessing’s masonry and plastering services, along with the phrase Dealer in Fine Quality of Lime. Addressed to A. M. Holter Hardware Co., the handwritten request asks for two barrels of Portland cement and one sack of red Butte plaster Paris, reflecting practical supply needs for active construction work.
