Posted in 1912, this St Helena, California postcard shows the main entrance to the St. Gothard Inn, a hillside lodging property in the Napa Valley community.

St Helena developed as an important agricultural and travel center within Napa County, serving surrounding vineyards, farms, and visitors moving through the valley by rail and road. Hotels and inns in the region often occupied elevated sites or landscaped properties that offered views and a sense of retreat within the valley landscape. Postcards documenting these establishments highlighted entrances, gardens, and surrounding vegetation to present the setting as part of the experience of travel through California’s wine-growing districts.

The image shows the gated stone entrance leading up a sloped drive toward the St. Gothard Inn building, which sits on a rise above the roadway. Decorative stone gateposts flank the entrance, while palms and shrubs line the landscaped grounds. Telegraph poles and overhead lines run along the roadside in the foreground. The printed caption at the bottom reads Main Entrance, St. Gothard Inn, St. Helena, Napa Co., Cal. The reverse shows a divided back with a 1912 postmark and handwritten correspondence.
