This 1916 postcard of the Leavitt Block in Sanford, Maine documents a prominent early twentieth-century commercial building anchoring the town’s retail district.

Sanford developed as a textile and manufacturing center in southern Maine, and its downtown blocks reflected the prosperity of that industrial era. Multi-story brick commercial structures with street-level storefronts and upper-floor offices were typical of New England mill towns. Postcards of business blocks served both as civic boosters and as practical correspondence pieces, especially after the divided-back format became standard in the years following 1907.

The image shows the three-story Leavitt Block occupying a corner lot, with large arched windows on the upper floors and striped awnings shading the ground-level shops. Visible signage includes Bennett’s Drug Store and references to coal and other retail enterprises, offering a snapshot of local commerce in 1916. Pedestrians and an early automobile animate the street scene. The reverse is divided back and postmarked, consistent with its documented 1916 use.
