This 1940s real photo postcard documents Letterman General Hospital at the Presidio of San Francisco, presenting a formal front view of the military medical complex beneath a large American flag.

Military hospitals of the Second World War and immediate postwar period became visible symbols of federal presence and wartime infrastructure on the West Coast. At the Presidio, Letterman General Hospital functioned as a primary treatment and recovery center, and photographic postcards of the grounds circulated as visual records of military architecture and national service.

The image features the hospital building framed by manicured trees and landscaped grounds, with the United States flag flying above the roofline and the facility name printed along the lower margin of the photograph. Symmetry and institutional scale are emphasized through aligned windows and entrances across the façade. The back is printed on EKC photographic paper, consistent with real photo postcard production of the era. The card is unposted.
