Sacramento California 1886 Hopkins Bros Baskets Wooden Ware Billhead - 8 x 4.5

This 1886-dated Sacramento billhead from A. S. Hopkins & Bro documents a wholesale transaction in wooden ware, baskets, and brooms within California’s late 19th-century commercial supply network.

Sacramento functioned as a major distribution hub in the post–Gold Rush economy, connecting agricultural regions, mining districts, and growing towns through rail and river systems. Firms dealing in wooden ware and household goods played a key role in supplying everyday necessities, operating at the intersection of local manufacturing and regional wholesale trade. The Hopkins firm’s listing of goods such as baskets, brushes, and brooms reflects the standardized inventory of general merchandise dealers serving both urban and rural markets.

The billhead features a detailed printed header with the business name, product categories, and address on J Street between Third and Fourth, paired with handwritten entries itemizing quantities and pricing. The transaction is dated August 31, 1886, with period ink notation and accounting marks visible across the lower portion. Typography and layout present a structured commercial format typical of the era, combining bold product identification with functional ledger space for recording sales.
