Rockaway Beach developed as one of New York City’s major seaside destinations during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawing thousands of summer visitors from Manhattan and Brooklyn by ferry and rail. Cottage colonies and bungalow courts appeared along the barrier island to accommodate seasonal guests seeking modest but comfortable lodging near the Atlantic shore. These clusters of small houses became a defining feature of Rockaway’s resort landscape and frequently appeared on postcards promoting the area’s beach culture.
