Rochester New York 1879 Smith Perkins Wholesale Grocers Billhead 8.5 x 7

This 1879 Smith Perkins Wholesale Grocers billhead dates to Rochester’s late nineteenth-century commercial growth, when the city functioned as a regional distribution center for foodstuffs and household goods.

Rochester’s location along the Erie Canal and expanding rail networks supported a dense wholesale economy serving western New York and surrounding rural markets. Grocery wholesalers supplied merchants with staples such as flour, sugar, coffee, spices, and preserved goods, operating on structured credit terms that reflected both trust and scale. Billheads from this period document not only transactions but also the professional identity and reach of established firms within an increasingly interconnected marketplace.

The billhead features ornate Smith Perkins & Co. branding identifying the firm as wholesale grocers, with an illustrated building vignette at left and a Rochester dateline dated July 1879. Handwritten entries list multiple grocery items with quantities, pricing, and totals recorded in period penmanship, reinforcing its role as a working commercial document rather than a decorative form. The layout and accounting structure provide a clear snapshot of wholesale grocery operations during the post-Reconstruction era.
