This real photo postcard is postmarked 1909 and documents Hotel Castle Rock in Excelsior Springs, Missouri during the height of the town’s mineral water resort era.
Excelsior Springs developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a nationally known health destination, attracting visitors seeking therapeutic mineral waters. Large hillside hotels with expansive porches and varied rooflines were constructed to accommodate seasonal guests and long term boarders, forming a distinctive resort landscape above the town.
The photograph shows the substantial wood frame hotel set on a graded slope with a stone retaining wall in the foreground. Architectural details include multiple dormers, corner turrets, and a broad veranda extending along the facade. The printed caption at the bottom reads Hotel Castle Rock Excelsior Springs Mo, and a handwritten 1908 date appears at lower right, reinforcing the early twentieth century context.
