This real photo postcard is dated 1915 and captures a Fourth of July gathering along the shoreline of Maple Lake, Minnesota.

Small-town Independence Day celebrations frequently centered on lakes, parks, and communal outdoor spaces where boating, picnicking, and informal competitions structured the day’s activities. Canoes and small craft were common features of northern Minnesota holiday scenes, reflecting both recreation and local geography. The composition emphasizes shoreline activity framed by trees and gently sloping ground typical of early twentieth-century resort-era lake culture.

Several canoes rest along the water’s edge while groups of men, women, and children gather on the bank, some standing in clusters and others seated near the boats. Figures in period dress line the grassy rise to the right, and additional boats are visible farther down the shore. The inscription Maple Lake 4th of July 1915 appears along the lower margin, and the AZO real photo stock supports dating to the era; the card remains unposted.
