This 1907 real-photo postcard documents a lumber yard in Chatham, Michigan at a time when Upper Peninsula timber production remained central to regional industry.

Michigan’s lumber boom reshaped communities across the Upper Peninsula, where rail spurs connected sawmills and yards to broader Great Lakes markets. Even after the peak white pine era, local yards continued processing, stacking, and shipping dimensional lumber for construction and railroad use. Small towns like Chatham were tightly linked to these extractive and transport networks, with rail lines running directly alongside storage platforms and loading areas.

The photograph shows massive, neatly stacked piles of milled boards arranged in tall rectangular tiers beside a rail track. Two men stand on the upper stack holding tools, emphasizing both the scale of the lumber and the manual labor required to sort and stage it. The handwritten “Chatham Mich.” at lower left and the Velox photo paper back confirm the early twentieth-century production and documentary character of the image.
