This 1950s real photo postcard shows a Norfolk and Western 2-8-8-2 steam locomotive hauling a freight train through Lynnhurst, Massachusetts.

During the mid-twentieth century, large articulated steam locomotives such as the 2-8-8-2 type were used to move heavy freight trains across long distances and demanding grades. Railroads relied on these powerful engines for hauling coal, manufactured goods, and raw materials, and their distinctive articulated design allowed them to negotiate curves while pulling extremely long freight consists.

The photograph captures the locomotive advancing toward the camera with a dense plume of smoke rising above the boiler as the freight train stretches behind it along the right-of-way. Trackside telegraph poles, a nearby house, and rolling hills in the distance provide geographic context for the rural Massachusetts setting. The handwritten caption on the card identifies the locomotive type as a 2-8-8-2 and locates the scene at Lynnhurst, offering a documentary glimpse of late-era American steam freight operations.
