This real photo postcard is postmarked 1916 and depicts the Stanislaus River near Strawberry, California, within the forested Sierra Nevada corridor.

During the early twentieth century, Strawberry functioned as a mountain stop along the route into the high Sierra, drawing visitors for fishing, camping, and seasonal recreation. River scenes such as this one emphasized the rugged landscape and flowing water that defined the region’s appeal. The composition presents a narrow channel bordered by boulders and dense conifer stands, capturing the texture and depth of the wooded canyon environment rather than a broad scenic overlook.

The image shows moving water coursing between rock formations, with tall trees lining both banks and sunlight filtering across the stream. The lower margin bears the handwritten-style caption River nr Strawberry Cal and a negative number at right. The reverse is postmarked 1916 and includes period correspondence, confirming early circulation and use.
