Grass Valley California Bourn Residence 1914 RPPC Postcard Posted

This 1914 real photo postcard documents the Bourn Residence in Grass Valley, California, reflecting the wealth generated by hard rock gold mining in Nevada County during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Grass Valley became one of California’s most significant quartz mining centers, and prominent mining families constructed substantial homes that signaled economic success and regional influence. The residence shown here features steeply pitched rooflines, prominent chimneys, and stone exterior walls integrated into a terraced hillside setting. A broad stairway ascends from street level to a landscaped terrace, while climbing vines soften the façade and frame the entryway. The massing and materials convey both permanence and refined domestic architecture associated with affluent mining-era households.

The real photo process preserves architectural detail across the masonry and rooflines, with the caption Bourn Residence Grass Valley Cal visible along the lower margin. Postal markings confirm 1914 usage, situating the image firmly within the community’s mature mining period.
