This 1938 real photo postcard shows the artistic shop district bordering Ocean Avenue in Carmel by the Sea, California, during the late interwar period.
Carmel developed a national reputation in the early twentieth century as an artists’ colony and coastal cultural enclave, attracting painters, writers, and craftspeople who established studios and small commercial galleries along its village streets. The town’s architecture reflected this identity through steeply pitched roofs, cottage-style façades, and landscaped corners integrated into the surrounding Monterey pine canopy.
The image presents a curving street lined with studio-style buildings featuring tall gables and recessed storefronts, with mature trees framing the roadway. The lower left caption reads Artistic Shops border Ocean Ave. at Carmel by the Sea, Calif., and a small code number appears at lower right. The card was mailed in 1938, with a visible postmark and correspondence on the reverse.
