This 1940s real photo postcard captures an elevated view of Bodie, California, the preserved mining ghost town in Mono County, with its hillside cemetery visible in the foreground.

Bodie emerged during the late nineteenth-century silver boom and quickly became one of the West’s most notorious mining settlements, known for its rapid growth, wooden commercial blocks, and stark high-desert setting. By the mid-twentieth century, the town had long since declined, leaving behind weathered structures and a landscape that reflected both industrial ambition and abandonment. The composition here emphasizes Bodie’s isolation, with scattered buildings stretching across the basin beneath rounded, treeless hills characteristic of the eastern Sierra Nevada region.

The real photo image shows the cemetery markers and fencing in the foreground, leading the eye toward the clustered wooden storefronts, residences, and outbuildings that define the townsite. A church structure is visible among the buildings, reinforcing the community’s former civic life. The caption at the bottom reads “Birds Eye View of Bodie, Calif., from the Cemetery,” and the EKC photo paper places production in the 1940s. The Frasher credit connects the card to the well-known California photography family whose work documented many Western towns and landscapes during this period.
