Berkeley California 2935 Shattuck Avenue Agnes Archer Gifts 1913 RPPC Postcard

This real photo postcard is postmarked 1913 and depicts the commercial building at 2935 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, California, associated with Agnes Archer Gifts.

Shattuck Avenue emerged in the early twentieth century as Berkeley’s principal commercial corridor, lined with multi-story mixed-use buildings housing retail shops, offices, and professional services. Architecture along the avenue often blended classical revival detailing with practical storefront design suited to pedestrian and streetcar traffic. Real photo postcards documenting specific street addresses provide valuable visual records of evolving urban business districts.

The image shows a substantial multi-story structure with decorative upper-level arches and projecting balconies above a recessed ground-floor entrance. Adjacent buildings extend along the block, and early automobiles and pedestrians appear at street level. The reverse bears a 1913 cancellation confirming postal use, and the real photo format preserves façade detail and signage context within the downtown setting.
