This 1910s divided-back postcard titled One of the Big Guns Fishers Island, N.Y. documents the coastal artillery defenses positioned on Fisher’s Island at the eastern end of Long Island, New York.

Fisher’s Island occupied a strategic military position guarding the approaches to Long Island Sound and the harbors of New London and New York. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, massive disappearing guns and fixed coastal artillery were installed as part of the broader harbor defense system. These fortifications reflected evolving military engineering designed to counter naval threats, combining reinforced concrete emplacements with heavy-caliber guns capable of commanding shipping lanes.

The image shows a large coastal artillery piece with numerous uniformed men posed atop and around the mechanism, offering a clear view of the machinery, gearing, and carriage system. The caption appears along the upper margin. The reverse features a divided back layout and is unposted.
