Watsonville developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as an agricultural center in the Pajaro Valley, with orchards, berry fields, and vegetable farms connected by rural roadways leading toward the town’s commercial core. Roads like Lake Avenue functioned as everyday transportation corridors between farms and markets. Period postcards frequently documented these quiet stretches of roadway, presenting the surrounding landscape, roadside fencing, and prominent trees that framed travel routes through California’s farming districts.
