This 1910s Ukiah, California postcard depicts the Mendocino State Hospital complex set against foothill terrain in a mailed divided back format.

Established in the late nineteenth century, the Ukiah facility formed part of California’s state hospital system, with expansive grounds and multi-wing institutional buildings designed in prominent brick and stone forms. Period postcards commonly presented these campuses from a landscaped distance, emphasizing scale and setting. The composition frames the central structures with open foreground and mountain backdrop.

The image shows a cluster of red-toned brick buildings, including a prominent clock or bell tower at left and a larger central block with steep rooflines. Trees partially screen the lower elevations, while cultivated land or lawns occupy the foreground. The upper left caption reads State Hospital, Ukiah, Cal., and the reverse displays a divided back with green one-cent stamp and legible postmark confirming postal use.
