This 1913 image shows Uintah Railroad locomotive number 40, a narrow-gauge 2-8-2 steam engine built for heavy mountain service in the rugged terrain of Colorado and Utah.
The Uintah Railway was constructed to haul gilsonite and freight through steep grades and sharp curves, operating some of the most powerful narrow-gauge locomotives ever built. Engines such as number 40 were designed with substantial tractive effort and distinctive proportions to handle extreme western topography, becoming well-known among railroad historians for their engineering adaptations and operational challenges.
The photograph presents locomotive 40 in side profile with tender attached, clearly showing the 2-8-2 wheel arrangement, large smokestack, domes, and external piping. The compact wheelbase and mechanical detailing reflect narrow-gauge construction adapted for demanding routes. This example is a later 1940s print of the original 1913 scene and measures 3.5 x 5 inches.
