This 1948 photograph documents a St. Louis–San Francisco Railway 4-6-0 steam locomotive in Springfield, Missouri, capturing Frisco power during the final phase of mainline steam operations.

By the late 1940s, Ten-Wheeler 4-6-0 locomotives remained in secondary passenger and freight service even as dieselization accelerated across major rail systems. The Frisco maintained extensive operations through Missouri and the Midwest, with Springfield serving as a key division point and shop location. Engines of this class reflected late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century design principles adapted for decades of continued utility.

The image shows locomotive number 1109 at trackside with tender coupled behind, ladders positioned along the boiler, and shop or terminal structures visible in the background. The scalloped-edge black-and-white print measures approximately 3.5 x 5.75 inches and presents strong mechanical detail in the running gear, headlamp housing, and pilot assembly.
