This 1930s real photo postcard shows the fish hatchery near Mount Shasta, California, an important early facility in the development of fish propagation programs in Northern California.

The McCloud River watershed played a central role in California’s early fish conservation and stocking efforts. Hatcheries in the Mount Shasta region supported the propagation of trout and other species intended to replenish streams and lakes throughout the state. By the early twentieth century the area had become closely associated with fisheries management, scientific hatchery work, and recreational angling tied to the cold, spring-fed waters flowing from Mount Shasta.

The photograph presents a series of rectangular hatchery ponds arranged beside a small complex of buildings surrounded by tall conifers. A walkway and low wooden structures divide the water basins used for raising young fish before release into regional waterways. Snow-covered slopes of Mount Shasta rise faintly in the background, placing the hatchery within the broader mountain landscape that shaped Northern California’s fisheries and outdoor recreation traditions.
