During the 1940s, Market Street Railway Company operated Brill-built electric coaches on the 33 line through residential San Francisco neighborhoods.

Market Street Railway represented one of the last major privately operated transit systems in San Francisco before consolidation into Muni, and its trolley coach fleet bridged private streetcar heritage with modern electric bus technology. Brill equipment was widely used across American transit systems during this transitional era.

The photograph captures Brill coach 51 navigating a sweeping curve on the 33 line, twin poles engaged with overhead wire and destination sign visible. Residential homes, early automobiles, and distinctive streetlamps frame the urban setting, providing strong geographic character. Reverse includes typed identification and Railway Negative Exchange stamp with additional ownership mark.
