This 1906 postcard documents the American stage production of Puccini’s Madam Butterfly at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC, during the early period of international opera popularity in the United States. The work, which premiered in 1904, quickly became a cultural touchpoint for audiences fascinated by Japonisme, theatrical spectacle, and the growing global circulation of European opera.

The illustrated front features a stylized scene from the opera, depicting Cio-Cio-San in traditional kimono presenting a small object to Lieutenant Pinkerton within a Japanese garden setting framed by red architectural railings and flowering branches. Printed caption text references the opera directly, anchoring the imagery to a theatrical performance context rather than generic Orientalist design. As a 1906 example, the card features an undivided back format common to American postcards prior to the March 1, 1907 regulatory change, when messages were still required to be written on the front.
