Posted in 1906, this Los Angeles, California postcard shows the Santa Fe Railroad’s La Grande Station, one of the city’s principal passenger depots during the early twentieth century.

Railroad terminals played a central role in the rapid growth of Los Angeles during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, linking the city with national rail networks that brought passengers, freight, and new residents to Southern California. The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway established La Grande Station as its primary Los Angeles passenger facility, and the distinctive domed structure became a recognizable landmark within the expanding downtown transportation district.
