Lodi California Washington Market German Bakery Butcher 1904 Billhead 11 x 8.5

This original business billhead was issued in 1904, documenting early commercial life in Lodi, California during its formative years as an agricultural and retail center.

At the turn of the twentieth century, small California towns supported a dense network of neighborhood markets, bakeries, and butcher shops that catered to both immigrant communities and the region’s growing farming population. German-owned food businesses were especially prominent, combining Old World baking traditions with American retail practices. Surviving billheads from these firms provide valuable insight into local consumption patterns, pricing, and the everyday mechanics of food distribution before chain groceries and industrial bakeries reshaped the marketplace.

This 1904 billhead was issued by The Washington Market and German Bakery of Lodi, California, operated as a combined butcher and bakery offering choice cuts of veal, beef, and pork alongside cakes, pies, doughnuts, and bakery goods. The printed letterhead features bold typography with decorative flourishes and lists the proprietors along with the business name. The document records a handwritten account entry for beef ham, marked paid, with period penmanship and accounting notation. The billhead measures approximately 11 x 8.5 inches and shows original folds, light toning, and minor handling wear consistent with age and use.
