This 1904 merchant receipt from Laurin, Montana documents everyday commerce in a small early twentieth-century Western town.
M. Johnson operated a general merchandise establishment offering groceries, dry goods, and assorted provisions, as prominently printed on the billhead. The decorative boxed slogan, “All goods carefully selected and sold at right prices,” reflects the marketing tone of small-town retailers serving rural communities during this period of Montana’s agricultural and mining development.
Dated March 22, 1904, the receipt records the purchase of fresh eggs totaling 30.00, with a bold Paid stamp applied from Virginia City, Montana. The ledger-style sheet features printed column rules in red and blue ink, handwritten entries, fold lines, and period toning consistent with early twentieth-century business documents. The format measures approximately 8 x 6.5 inches.
