This Victorian trade card dates to the 1890s and promotes sewing thread produced by J. & P. Coats, one of the most prominent thread manufacturers of the nineteenth century whose advertising appeared widely on colorful promotional cards distributed to customers.

During the late nineteenth century, trade cards served as an important advertising medium for household products such as sewing thread, soap, and food items. Manufacturers distributed these small illustrated cards through merchants and dry goods stores, encouraging customers to collect the designs while reinforcing brand recognition. J. & P. Coats became especially well known for its elaborate advertising campaigns that paired decorative imagery with the company’s thread branding.

The illustration shows a young girl posed as a rifle champion standing beside a large spool marked J. & P. Coats Best Six Cord thread. She wears a decorative helmet and sash while holding a rifle upright, with a shooting target range appearing in the background and a trophy placed beside the thread spool. The colorful chromolithographed design combines playful imagery with the prominent display of the brand’s sewing thread emblem, a characteristic approach used in Victorian advertising trade cards.
