Posted in 1941, this Honolulu postcard shows Waikiki Beach with the volcanic slopes of Diamond Head rising prominently along the shoreline.

Waikiki developed into Hawaii’s most recognizable resort district during the early twentieth century as hotels, beach clubs, and recreational facilities expanded along the south shore of Oahu. The broad sandy beach with views toward Diamond Head became a defining image of Honolulu tourism, frequently appearing in promotional photography and postcards distributed to visitors. The combination of shoreline leisure activity, hotel architecture, and the distinctive volcanic crater created one of the most widely reproduced landscape views in the Hawaiian Islands.
