This 1930s real photo postcard shows the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii, one of the most significant institutions dedicated to the study of Hawaiian history, culture, and natural science.
Founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in memory of his wife Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop of the Hawaiian royal family, the museum developed into a major center for research on Polynesian culture and Pacific natural history. The institution houses extensive collections documenting Hawaiian heritage, archaeology, and ethnology, and its buildings became prominent architectural landmarks within Honolulu during the early twentieth century.
The photograph presents the original museum structure built of dark stone with arched entrances and steep rooflines reflecting Romanesque architectural influences. The caption printed along the bottom identifies the building as the “B. P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu.” As a real photo postcard printed on AZO photographic paper, the card preserves sharp photographic detail typical of early twentieth-century RPPC production used to document notable buildings and cultural institutions.
