This photograph was taken in 1955 and shows an ornate animal cage wagon pulled by a mule team during the first operating season of the Mickey Mouse Club Circus at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
The Mickey Mouse Club Circus was an early live entertainment production developed for Disneyland and connected with the nationally broadcast television program The Mickey Mouse Club. The attraction incorporated traditional circus imagery including parade wagons, animal transport cages, and decorative vehicles modeled after the elaborate wagons historically used by American traveling circuses. These wagons contributed to the visual spectacle and operational structure of the circus attraction.
The image shows a highly decorative cage wagon featuring sculptural framing around barred window openings and ornate relief ornamentation along the sides and roofline. A team of mules pulls the wagon along a paved roadway while a driver rides atop the wagon body. The background landscape shows graded embankments, eucalyptus trees, and utility poles characteristic of the developing terrain surrounding Disneyland during its inaugural year.
