This linen-era postcard from 1940s Chico, California features the Hotel Oaks alongside a novelty illustration comparing the structure to the massive Hooker Oak tree once associated with the city.

Chico developed into one of Northern California’s most important agricultural and commercial centers during the early automobile tourism era, with hotels and roadside lodging becoming increasingly important to regional travel infrastructure. The postcard uses a stylized proportional illustration in which the multi-story Hotel Oaks appears embedded within the enormous Hooker Oak, emphasizing the tree’s reputation as one of the largest oak trees in the world. Printed text at left provides measurements and historical notes connected to Sir Joseph Hooker, while the linen stock and bright lithographic palette reflect postcard production trends of the period.

The card features an unposted divided-back format with Beals LITHO ART-TONE printing information along the center divider and a clean graphic composition centered on the exaggerated scale comparison between the landmark tree and hotel building. Architectural details of the hotel remain clearly rendered, including rows of illuminated windows and the projecting entrance canopy beneath the stylized oak canopy.
