This 1933 commemorative postcard documents the evolution of Railway Post Office service on the Burlington Route during the Century of Progress exposition era in Chicago.

Railway Post Office operations transformed American mail distribution during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by allowing clerks to sort mail aboard moving trains across major rail corridors. Railroad companies such as the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad promoted the speed and efficiency of their mail handling systems as symbols of industrial modernization, especially during national exhibitions and transportation showcases associated with the interwar period.

The postcard features paired photographic views comparing an early Burlington Route mail car with the interior of a modern Railway Post Office sorting car used during the early 1930s. Printed explanatory text discusses seventy years of progress in railway mail service beginning with the first westbound Quincy-to-Saint Joseph mail route in 1864. The reverse includes a Century of Progress commemorative cachet and postal markings tied to the 1933 Chicago world’s fair period, adding additional transportation and postal-history interest for collectors of railroad and Railway Mail Service material.
