This 1893 Lees Taylor billhead from Boulder, Montana documents a handwritten business payment note on a contractor’s printed building materials letterhead.
During the early 1890s, Montana towns such as Boulder and Helena depended on regional lumber dealers and contractors for structural supplies tied to residential and commercial growth. Firms advertising lumber, lath, shingles, doors, windows, mouldings, lime, and hair positioned themselves as both material suppliers and builders, often preparing plans, specifications, and estimates for clients across neighboring communities.
The printed heading reads “Lees Taylor, Dealer in Lumber, Lath, Shingles, Doors, Windows, Mouldings, Lime Hair, and All Kinds of Building Material,” with “Contractor and Builder” noted at left. Dated December 26, 1893 in Boulder, Montana, the handwritten message to A. M. Holter Hdqrs in Helena states that an enclosed cheque for $25 is sent in settlement of account, and is signed “Yours Truly, Lee Taylor.”
