Barnes Sells Floto Circus Woman Performer Horse Wagon 1940s Photo 3.5 x 5.5

This 1940s photograph shows a performer with the Barnes-Sells Floto Circus seated on a white horse beside a circus wagon on the showgrounds.

Barnes-Sells Floto Circus operated as one of the prominent American traveling circuses during the early twentieth century, eventually becoming associated with the American Circus Corporation before the Ringling organization consolidated several major shows. Circus grounds scenes such as this one capture the working environment behind the public spectacle, where performers, wagons, and tents were arranged around the lot between performances and during travel days.

The photograph shows a smiling female performer (identified as Wendy in other related photos) seated confidently on a white horse, wearing a riding outfit and cap typical of equestrian circus performers of the period. Behind her stands a circus wagon bearing the lettering Barnes Sells Floto Combined Shows, with large wooden wheels and equipment stacked along the wagon platform. A canvas circus tent is visible to the left, while the open show lot and additional circus equipment extend into the background. The composition emphasizes the performer and horse against the circus wagon signage, clearly linking the portrait to the Barnes-Sells Floto traveling show.
