This 1940s photograph shows a Barnes-Sells Floto Circus performer standing beside a white circus horse on the showgrounds during the traveling circus season.

Barnes-Sells Floto Circus operated as one of the major American traveling circuses during the early twentieth century before becoming associated with the American Circus Corporation and later absorbed into the Ringling organization. Traveling circuses moved from town to town with large communities of performers, animal trainers, and workers, creating temporary showgrounds filled with tents, wagons, and equipment between performances.

The photograph features a smiling female performer standing beside a white horse fitted with circus tack, including decorative harness hardware typical of trained equestrian animals used in circus acts. She wears riding attire consisting of jodhpurs, jacket, and hat suited for circus performance work. Circus tents and show equipment appear in the background, while another circus worker crosses the lot behind her, capturing a candid moment from everyday life on the circus grounds rather than a staged arena performance.
