This 1940s photograph shows a Barnes-Sells Floto Circus performer in costume standing on the circus grounds while holding a balance rod used in performance.
Barnes-Sells Floto Circus operated as one of the notable American traveling circuses of the early twentieth century before becoming associated with the American Circus Corporation and eventually absorbed within the Ringling circus system. Traveling shows functioned as self-contained communities of performers, musicians, animal trainers, and stage crews who moved from town to town, assembling temporary tent cities at each stop along the touring route.
The photograph features a young female performer dressed in a stage costume with puffed sleeves and a short performance skirt, standing on the circus lot in front of several large circus tents. She holds a long rod that may have been used as a balancing prop or training bar associated with acrobatic or wire acts. Nearby circus equipment and rope lie on the ground while the canvas big-top structures and smaller side tents form the backdrop, capturing a candid moment of preparation or rehearsal away from the arena.
