This 1948 Atlantic City Jitney Association Willys Jeep C-10 model is shown in regular passenger service on an Atlantic City street, operating as a ten-cent jitney under the city’s regulated independent carrier system.
Atlantic City’s jitney tradition dates to 1915, when independent operators began running small motor buses along fixed corridors parallel to streetcar lines. By the mid-twentieth century the Atlantic City Jitney Association had formalized routes, fares, and vehicle standards, creating one of the longest continuously operating jitney systems in the United States.
The vehicle displays JITNEY on the destination sign and PAY AS YOU ENTER 10¢ on the body panel, with Atlantic City Jitney Association lettering along the side. The back notation identifies it as a 1948 Willys/Jeep C-10 model in blue and white, the official colors of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and notes Betty H. Johnson Collection neg #32. Urban storefronts and pedestrians provide period street context behind the bus.
