In July 1967, Louisville photographer Bill Rhodes documented the Arthur Bros Circus street parade, capturing a Mother Goose themed circus wagon pulled by horses during the show’s promotional procession.
Arthur Brothers Circus traveled through regional American towns during the mid twentieth century, maintaining the long-standing circus tradition of parading wagons, animals, performers, and bands through city streets before opening performances. These parades functioned as both spectacle and advertisement, drawing crowds to the showgrounds while displaying the pageantry of circus wagons and costumed performers.
The photograph shows a decorative circus wagon shaped as a swan or Mother Goose figure, carrying a costumed performer seated on the sculpted bird form while playing a horn. The wagon rides on large wooden wheels and is drawn by a team of horses led by mounted handlers. Spectators stand behind rope barriers along the street while circus tents and equipment are visible behind the parade route, situating the scene near the showgrounds. A sign reading Private Property No Parking appears along the fence line. A reverse stamp identifies the image as Original Photo by Bill Rhodes of Louisville, Kentucky, dated Jul 67, with a reproduction prohibition notice.
