This 1879 financial draft from the First National Bank of Ann Arbor documents everyday banking activity during the late nineteenth-century expansion of regulated commercial finance in the American Midwest.

In this period, locally issued bank checks and money-order forms functioned as both payment instruments and institutional identifiers, carrying engraved typography and structured fields that reflected emerging standards in commercial recordkeeping. Such documents circulated within regional networks of merchants, households, and professionals, tying small transactions to nationally chartered banking systems.

The piece is printed with the First National Bank of Ann Arbor masthead and completed in manuscript with the date July 23, 1879. A revenue stamp is affixed at the left, and the form is made out in dollars and cents with a written pay line and signature. The paper measures approximately 2.75 x 7 inches and features its original printed layout and period handwriting.
