This postcard was mailed from Sag Harbor, New York on July 9, 1907 and depicts the 57 foot whale captured at Amagansett on February 22, 1907.
Long Island’s eastern end maintained deep ties to Atlantic whaling into the early twentieth century, with Sag Harbor and surrounding communities preserving maritime traditions even as the industry declined. Large shore captures drew crowds and press coverage, especially when specimens were destined for scientific display. Postcards such as this served as documentary souvenirs of regional maritime events.
