Long Island has long occupied a distinctive place in American history, stretching from the urban edge of Brooklyn and Queens to the maritime villages of Suffolk County. From early colonial settlements and Revolutionary War sites to Gilded Age estates, seaside resorts, and working waterfront communities, the region reflects layered centuries of architectural, cultural, and economic development.
